Reduced R and D service due to regulatory inspection
Between Monday 16th and Friday 20th November 2009 SalfoR+D will be running a severely reduced service. There will be no service available from 23rd November until Tuesday 1st December. Normal working will resume on Dec 2nd. The reduction in service is to allow staff to prepare for the MHRA inspection taking place during this period and to accommodate the inspection itself. Due to the expected backlog you should expect a delay in response. We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.
Please note that SalfoR +D will be closed to enquiries and new applications on Friday 6th Nov. This is to allow staff to clear current applications prior to the forthcoming regulatory inspection of Salford Royal Foundation Trust. Normal service will resume on Monday 9th November. We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience

MHRA Inspection Dates Confirmed
We have now been informed that the dates of the MHRA inspection will be 24th-27th November, 2009. Please can you put these dates in your diary as you may be called for interview? The Inspectors will expect those called for interview to be present so if you have clinical commitments, you will need to cancel clinics. I have been informed by the MHRA that those called for interview will be given 6 weeks notice but I would put the dates in your diary now.
I have been informed by the MHRA Inspectorate that I will know around the 7th October which trials the MHRA would like to review and hence the PIs they will interview.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with the R&D office.

In readiness for the forthcoming MHRA inspection, please find attached a useful leaflet prepared by South Manchester’s R&D Department and Manchester Academic Health Sciences Centre (MAHSC) that will help those investigators involved in clinical trials of investigational medicinal products prepare themselves. We highly recommend you read this leaflet

Reduced R&D service over the next few weeks
Many of you will be aware that we have recently received notification from the Medicines Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) who safeguard the public’s health in clinical trials of investigational medicinal products that they are to undertake a routine statutory Good Clinical Practice Inspection at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust sometime between October and November 2009. Within the next week we have to submit a dossier of clinical trials data, our research facilities, relevant SOPs and policies and processes etc to the MHRA that will aid them in preparing for our inspection. However, at this time, a number of R&D staff are on annual leave and so while we will still provide an R&D service, it will be at a reduced level for the next few weeks while we finish compiling the dossier and make preparations for the inspection. In order that we continue to support clinical trials of investigational medicinal products at SRFT, the MHRA inspection needs to be successful.
I realise that this is not ideal but your assistance and patience would be greatly appreciated during this time. I will let you know as soon as normal service resumes.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like to discuss this further.
Many thanks and best wishes
Lloyd

Salford PCT and Salford Royal to be at forefront of World Class medical research
Salford Primary Care Trust (PCT) and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust are celebrating after the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre (MAHSC) achieved official national status, bringing huge benefits to local patients.
The organisations are two of seven Greater Manchester partners in MAHSC, which was formed last year.
Currently £100 million a year is invested in health research in the region, but this national status will help bring in significant additional investment. It will also enable the Manchester partnership to compete globally with established centres, such as those in the United States, Canada, Singapore, Sweden and the Netherlands.
The Secretary of State, Alan Johnson announced this week that just five centres across the country have been designated as an Academic Health Centre, with Manchester being the only place outside of London and Cambridge.
Research in Manchester is already leading, both nationally and internationally in areas such as cancer, cardiovascular medicine and respiratory medicine and the new partnership will also include the full range of health research undertaken in hospitals, mental health and in the community.
Salford PCT Chief Executive Dr Mike Burrows said: “I am absolutely thrilled that we have been successful in our application to become Manchester Academic Health Science Centre.
“Our ambition is to firmly put Manchester on the national and international map in terms of health research. This development has stemmed from the partner organisations’ shared desire to attract the best healthcare workers and researchers to the region.”
David Dalton, Chief Executive, Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust, commented: “Achieving official national status for the Manchester Academic Heath Science Centre is excellent news, not only for the Trusts involved but for the entire region.
“Our services are recognised as some of the best in the NHS and this partnership will strengthen our delivery of top quality healthcare to the people living in Manchester and Salford”.
The Manchester Academic Health Science Centre’s application for national status was particularly praised for its vision over the next ten years.
By 2013 it aims to establish a number of internationally competitive health research programmes together with a world class research infrastructure – and by 2020 it aims to ensure Greater Manchester will have become one of the world’s leading health research centres.
The seven members of Manchester AHSC are:
· Salford Primary Care Trust
· Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust
· University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Foundation Trust
· Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust
· Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust
· Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust
· The University of Manchester
