Research Portfolio

Research Portfolio
Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust hosts over 500 active research projects covering five main areas:

Clinical Neurosciences led by Dr Pippa Tyrrell
Dermatology led by Professor Chris Griffiths
Diabetes & kidney disease  led by Dr Martin Gibson
Gastroentorology led by Professor David Thompson
3IRG led by Professor Gordon Carlson

The Trust continues to build its portfolio of both commercial and non-commercial Phase 3 and 4 Clinical Trials within these research themes and is currently involved in expanding its Phase 1 and 2 trials with the development of a dedicated Clinical Trials Unit.  This opportunity provides the Trust and its patients with the opportunity to develop cutting edge treatments and improved methods of care well into the 21st century.

The Trust is also the base for two of the North West’s Local Research Networks, stroke and diabetes, with staff based at the hospital taking the lead on developing regional research into the illnesses and increasing patient participation in stroke and diabetes research.  It has also received National Institute for Health Research Technology Platform funding to support the advanced diagnostic imaging research undertaken at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

Our research projects receive over £8.5m of external grant funding and result in many peer reviewed publications. In conducting and developing research we work very closely with university and NHS partners including Salford PCT and the Greater Manchester Research Alliance.
